Two senior Industrial Engineering students, Halil Bayrak
and Kürşad Astemir, attended the conference, which took
place between January 11 and 13 in Grenoble, France, as
finalists in ROADEF '99 Challenge, a competition "open
to everybody, in particular to young researchers. " The
research work was carried out as part of a term project
in IE 477 Production Systems-Design, a course taught by
Dr. Ömer Benli. Halil represented the team formed by
Şükrü Bırakolu, Ercan Sakarya, Ülker Arslan, İnan
Açıloğlu, and himself, while Kürşad's team included his
classmates‚ Çağrı Gürbüz, Çağrı Haksöz, Osman
Karslıoğlu, and Aydın Ünal. There were 13 participants
in the contest coming from France, Italy, Turkey, and
Brazil. All participants addressed an inventory
management problem that involved designing a
computer-based system for managing a fleet of equipment
and determining when to subcontract work or buy new
equipment.
K. Astemir's team won second prize, 2000 French Francs
worth of scientific books offered by Le Monde en Tique
in conjunction with the French Operations Research
Society.
H. Bayrak's team won third Prize, 1000 FF offered by
Euro-Decision.
First prize, 5000 FF, went to researchers from
Laboratoire de Modelisation et de Calcul - IMAG,
Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, France.
